Foresight, Insight and the Quest to Transform Learning through Game-Based Learning

In this session, Drs. Satid Thammasitboon, Teresa Chan, and Eric Gantwerker will be discussing the paradigms within game-based learning (GBL) and considering the future applications of GBL within health professions education. They will explore unanswered questions and discuss future needs for research and innovation.

Dr. Teresa Chan is an associate professor and Associate Dean of Continuing Professional Development at McMaster University. Dr. Chan is very well known for her scholarship in faculty development and online education research. She is one of the founding members of the METRIQ Study group. She is the Chief Strategic Officer for the CanadiEM digital community of practice. She is a Senior Advisor of the international Faculty Incubator program for the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM) group. For ALiEM, she has also served on their Editorial Board and was a lead of the Medical Education in Cases Series (www.aliem.com/medic). Dr. Chan is also interested in developing medical education innovations (and evaluating them!). For instance, she has co-developed and is evaluating a serious game about emergency department flow called GridlockED (www.gridlockedgame.com)!

Eric Gantwerker, MD, MS, MMSc(MedEd), FACS, AFAMEE is a Pediatric Otolaryngologist at Cohen Children’s Hospital at Northwell Health/Hofstra, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He holds a Master of Medical Science (MMSc) in Medical Education with a special focus on educational technology, educational research, cognitive science of learning, and curriculum development from Harvard Medical School and a Master of Science in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University.

He has a special interest in faculty development and has been a speaker, conference panelist, or faculty at over 50 local, 20 regional, 100 national, and 22 international workshops, courses, and conferences. He is also an active blogger and podcaster for several organizations including the Harvard Macy Institute (HMI), Harvard Medical School CME Online, BackTable Innovations and several others. He has contributed to over 30 blogs and podcasts. He has been featured in the news in print and through live interviews over 25 times including USA Today, Businesswire, The Washington Post, Nature Medicine, Fox News, and KevinMD.

He also works as the medical director of a medical video game company, Level Ex, that utilizes game technology and psychology to create interactive educational experiences for healthcare professionals. He oversees all the medical and educational functions of the company including strategy, design and development, and efficacy studies.

Through all his endeavors, he is recognized nationally and internationally as an up-and-coming expert on the implementation of educational technologies and gaming, motivational theory, the cognitive psychology of learning, and putting theory into practice for health professions education. In recognition, he was awarded Associate Membership in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators program and is an Associate Fellow of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE).

Dr. Thammasitboon is a pediatric intensivist at Texas Childrenā€™s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. In his role as a director of the Center for Research, Innovation and Scholarship (CRIS) of a large department of multidisciplinary faculty across three hospital campuses, he has fostered and established communities of scholars who pursuit scholarship in in Health Professions Education. His areas of research include clinical reasoning, assessment instrument development and validation, competency-based education, educational games, technology enhanced learning among many others. He also directs the BEME International Collaborating Center and Health Professions Education Certificate program at Texas Childrenā€™s Hospital.
