Significant Developments in the History of IAMSE - 2002

Proceedings of the 2001 Annual Association Meeting (Mayo Clinic) are published as a supplement of our electronic journal. They feature written summaries of focus sessions and workshops, handout materials, PowerPoint slides, and complete audio recordings of plenary sessions delivered by featured speakers. 

The first day-long IAMSE courses in faculty development are provided during the 2002 Annual Association Meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico. The goal is to offer courses for basic science faculty that are unique, relevant, and unavailable elsewhere. 

Individuals from 18 countries participate in the 2002 Sixth Annual Association Meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico. This is our first Association Meeting outside the United States. 

Proceedings of the Guadalajara Meeting are completed and published on our website within 4 months after that event. They feature written summaries of focus sessions and workshops, handout materials, PowerPoint slides, and complete audio recordings of plenary sessions delivered by featured speakers. 

Primary authors have been identified and are researching the first IAMSE monograph publication on international medical science education. This project is being led by Dr. Jamsheer Talati (The Aga Khan University Faculty of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan) 

IAMSE is invited to join the Council of Academic Societies. The Council of Academic Societies, along with the Council of Deans and the Council of Teaching Hospitals comprise the three bodies which govern the Association of American Medical Colleges. 

Dr. Giulia Bonaminio is elected President of IAMSE. Along with Dr. Aviad Haramati, Past President, her new cabinet of elected Officers includes  
Vice President - Dr. E. Pat Finnerty  
Secretary - Dr. Deborah Barr  
Treasurer - Dr. James Dixon 

The Basic Science Educator evolves into the Journal of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (JIAMSE) and a dynamic new Editor-in-Chief is appointed (Dr. Douglas Gould, University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center). His charge is to bring this semi-annual publication into line with other world-class professional journals. 

Arrangements are made to publish the Journal of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (JIAMSE) in three languages, English, Spanish, and French. 

The concept of Webcast Audio Seminars is developed and auditioned in the inaugural Spring Series of four. This is followed by a Winter Series of six 1-hour seminars addressing the theme Recent Trends in Basic Science Education. Acceptance of this format by the IAMSE membership and the medical education community at large is overwhelming. 

Plans are consummated to offer a joint-membership option in IAMSE and the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE). This will become effective January 1, 2003. 

Membership in IAMSE increases to be represented by 50 countries.
