What is an IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminar?

Essentially a 1-hour telephone conference call supplemented by webcast PowerPoint slides, an IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminar is a method of exchanging vital information on timely topics in medical education. The slant of each is geared toward our membership who have responsibility for teaching the basic sciences to those in medical training. These basic sciences encompass all subjects that have arisen from the seven traditional disciplines of:

* Anatomy
* Behavioral Science
* Biochemistry
* Microbiology and Immunology
* Pathology
* Pharmacology
* Physiology

As with other IAMSE events, all medical professionals are welcome to participate and non-members are admitted on a space-available basis. Currently, the cost is $20 for IAMSE Members/$40 for Non Members. Institutional Groups may register for $500 for the entire series, or $100 per session. International in scope, these seminars routinely attract participants from three or more countries.

Several topics are being planned and will be explored in groups of six related 1-hour seminars at two-week intervals over the course of thee months time. Each group thus constitutes a thematic series, although each presentation is designed to stand independently of the others.

FORMAT

* IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminars are similar to the small group Focus Sessions we offer at our Annual Association Meetings (but shorter), in that each will address a single topic. These Seminars are actually 55-minutes in length and begin with a 30-35 minute (maximum) formal presentation by an acknowledged expert in that field. The speaker controls his/her PowerPoint slides that appear either on your computer monitor, or as you have arranged to project from a computer onto your conference room screen. This is followed by 15-20-minutes of moderated discussion/Q&A. One (sometimes two) individuals have been invited to present and lead each session which you "attend" directly from your office or conference room via teleconference call. The speaker delivers this presentation directly from his/her own office. To get the most out of this form of interaction, we encourage you to read in advance the two supplementary files, Getting the Most from an IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminar and IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminar Netiquette

LOGISTICS

* All Audio Seminars are conducted using the IAMSE Teleconference Bridge (read FAQ's number 1 and 6). Our current service will accommodate thirty (30) phone lines on each call, so advance registration is necessary to secure your place. A registrant may be alone on the phone, be on a speaker phone in his/her office with one or two others, or dial in directly from a conference room speaker phone with full projection equipment bringing this presentation to 10, 20, or even more individuals. Please note - it is essential when using speaker phones that mute buttons be switched ON. Again, at present there is no fee to register and the only cost to participants is the long distance phone call to Kansas (U.S.A.) where our bridge is located. Medical staff and faculty members - especially IAMSE members - from all parts of the world are cordially invited to participate.

SUPPLEMENTARY VISUAL AIDS

* The IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminars utilize a webcast presentation system that has been created especially for us by Peter Anderson, D.V.M., Ph.D. At 48-hours before the seminar, all registered participants will be provided with a designated phone number to call. In that e-mail message will be the URL for the webcast and instructions to set your Internet browser (Explorer ot Netscape) to that address prior to phoning into the presentation. This site is static, being set to the presenter's first slide. A second URL is provided as a "back-up" and this contains all the presenter's slides in HTML-format. These can be controlled by the participant so it also provides opportunity for registrants to preview all slides. (This also is the format in which presenters' slides are permanently posted to our website.) During the actual seminar, the presenter will control movement of the slides on your computer monitor.

FOLLOW-UP

* Shortly following each IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminar, a 500-word summary that reiterates the salient points addressed will be posted to our website. In addition, if the presenter agrees, the PowerPoint slides used during the presentation will also be posted and permanently archived in HTML-format. This affords those who could not attend the actual seminar the opportunity to view the materials presented. N.B. Slides are posted for viewing purposes only. If you wish to have any of these materials in their original PowerPoint format, out of courtesy, we ask that you request them directly from the presenter. Virtually no request has ever been denied.

* As these sessions are recorded, an audio of each session is also available after the session for any registered participants. A Real Audio Player is necessary to access.

We cordially invite you to join us for this interactive means of sharing information relevant to medical science education and medical science educators. The benefit of IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminars is that they are presented live, in real time, and are totally interactive, with experts in the subject presenting and leading the discussions. Also, because there is no need to leave your office, it is both efficient and relatively inexpensive - even for those outside the United States..

To better ensure your participation in this and other professional development events, we cordially invite you to become a member of IAMSE today!
